Muhammad Najem 15 yo photojournalist from Eastern Ghouta, compliments of Missy Morton |
When I push off and place
both feet in the boat,
I am received immediately by calm, dark sea.
I turn, look back at land boundaries, previously defined:
hard edges where I’ve come from dissolve
as clear water softens shore.
Moon hangs full, brilliant, peaceful in an open sky.
Sometimes, all freedom takes is the willingness
to no longer stay on demarcated ground.
(Poem written
in response to bombings in Eastern Ghouta and the photo journalism of a 15 yearold boy who hopes for a brighter tomorrow)
